Medusa, a figure from ancient Greek mythology, was one of the three Gorgon sisters. She is most famously known for her hair of living snakes and a gaze that could turn anyone who looked directly into her eyes to stone. Originally a beautiful maiden, Medusa was transformed into a monster by the goddess Athena as punishment for an indiscretion with Poseidon in Athena's temple. She was later beheaded by the hero Perseus, who used her severed head, which retained its petrifying power, as a weapon before offering it to Athena to place on her shield.
I remember watching Clash of the Titans (Harryhausen version!) as a child and being afraid to look at Medusa on the screen! I didn't want to turn to stone.
